The World I Come From
“If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place”. This quote is the one that has made me realize a lot of things. As a kid I was always a really shy person. I never liked being the center of attention or being asked what I wanted to do when I grow up. When I was little my dream was to become a professional soccer player, but only because soccer was my favorite sport at the time. I grew up in a house with 4 other relatives; my mom, dad, and two brothers. Me and My older brother attended Washington Elementary school and moved up to Steve Garvey. I was only able to attend Steve Garvey my 7th grade year because that was the time they decided to make all schools k-8. My parents always supported whatever decision I made no matter how ridiculous it was. I would say that I was pretty spoiled as a kid. I am the youngest of 4 older brothers which means I am the baby of the family. Being the baby of the family does have many perks. I could cry about anything I wanted or anything my older brothers would do, and I would never be the one who ended up in trouble with my parents. Of course as I got older and got a job I am expected to provide for myself. Nobody in my family would expect the youngest to make as big of a mistake that I did. Hopefully I am the only one in my family who has to learn this lesson the hard way.
As a kid some goals that I had set for myself was to always be better than the person next to me. I was a very competitive child who would get upset if I never won, that was probably the baby in me. My hardest obstacle while growing up was always trying to stay on pace for school. Every year I would have problems completing my work or just overall not getting along with my teachers. This has been a problem for me and my parents for as long as I can remember. The threat that my parents would always tell me was “You can’t go hang out with your friends until you finish your homework!” This would encourage me to blow through my homework as fast as I could so that I could go outside and play with my friends. This threat never failed when used against me. This special phrase is what helped me overcome my obstacle of not doing my homework. Thanks to my parents who found out what would get me motivated in school, I was able to get my homework done very quickly. I hated being grounded or in trouble for school work. What am I talking about, I still do hate being grounded for schoolwork!
I have made many mistakes in my life, but I feel like some mistakes are just lessons that need to be learned. My biggest mistake that I can think of is drinking and driving. This is my biggest and most recent mistake I have made in my life. The sad part about it is that instead of getting pulled over and receiving a DUI, I came to a complete stop after crashing straight into a large orange tree. My first car accident I have ever been in and it had to be while I was under the influence. I totalled my moms car and I don’t think I've ever seen her so worried about me. I have lost my drivers license and can no longer drive anywhere until the age of 21. I’ve had a few people tell me that I can apply for my license on my 18th birthday, which is still 8 months from now. This seems so surreal for me because I would have never expected such a thing to happen to me. Not in a million lifetimes. But I guess sometimes you just need something to wake you up from that fantasy land that you live in where you can do anything and never get punished. This has definitely changed the type of person that I am. I hope that nobody ever makes the same mistake I did because trust me, It is not worth it. I just hate that I had to learn the hard way and witness exactly how everything is firsthand.
A few words of advice that I would give people is that no matter what you do or how hard your life gets, it is never worth giving up. You should never let anything stand between you and your goals. No matter how hard life can get, success is always the best feeling. In my future I hope to attend Universal Technical Institute in Sacramento, CA. I first learned about this college my Junior year of High School but never showed much interest. But this year I am certain that this is the college that I wish to attend. I hope to make my family proud and prove to all the people who doubt me that they are wrong. I wish to work for a Nissan dealership one day and be able to live on my own without money ever being a problem for me. Working at Mcdonald’s and seeing people who have worked there for years motivates me to never become one of these people who never make it out of Lindsay. I want to be able to look back at my life and say that I went to college and I made moves that got me where I am today.
“If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place”. Hopefully now you understand why this quote really caught my attention. I have changed a lot from being a spoiled little brat to the Senior at Lindsay High School that I am today. I am very proud of who I am and am very thankful to be standing here today. I have many friends who could not handle the pressure of High School and are currently attending JJ Carins and I am thankful I did not end up on that route. I have made many mistakes that I am not proud of but nobody can change that past. I must look forward and leave the negativity behind me in order to have a successful life. I feel that Mistakes are obstacles that make people mentally stronger.
